School of Sardines

A CASE STUDY IN FlUID FLOW PATTERNS IN SCHOOLS

There is little doubt that the complex morphology of a dynamic school of fish is spectacular to witness. However, to what extent does complex fluid flow interaction with both the individual fish and collective school define, e.g., internal offset spacing and overall school shape? Scientist have long understood the pressure sensor response for sardines. Can this be innate ability be correlated to the acoustic signature of the individual and school of sardines?

COMERI’s research plan is to:

  • Construct a computational model of a school to learn more about the complex fluid flow patterns and acoustic signature.
